Mary’s Meal’s Grateful to very generous Longford

Mary’s Meal’s Longford are very grateful to the people of Longford that all helped raise a huge sum to feed them that need it across many countries. They held a walk in conjunction with a walk by a group of volunteers who were passing through Longford on the 11th of August, the volunteers were from Dublin and Derry, they were doing a sponsored walk, the Longford branch walked some of the way with them, after they spent a little time in Longford where they had a large gathering of people to welcome them on their long and arduous journey. Mary’s Meal’s if you have not heard about them yet, feed over two million school going children with a daily meal at the cost of 9cent. 93percent of 1 euro all goes to them that need it, yes 9cent per meal that can feed one child on a school day, and 18.30euro for one child per year, yes 18.30euro. In honour of the money raised, Mary’s Meal’s Longford thought it was a good idea that school children would be the ones to pass the monies raised to the representative from Irelands Mary’s Meal’s headquarters. St Josephs got that honour today the 8th of sept, Mary’s Meal’s represented by Longford and headquarters, also in attendance school children from said school, Father Michael and Joe Flaherty, thanks to Father Michael for the thoughtful prayer for Our Lady’s Birthday also.

The Man The Myth The Legend Mickey Begley

Out and about cycling and I came across Mickey Begley of Begley’s Bar Killoe County Longford, sorting out empty’s from the bar. The man does not know what retirement is, he told me he built a house a bungalow on the site of the bar now back in 1965, and a little bird whispered to me (Councillor Gerard Hagan) that the man built it with blocks he made himself, a well thought of man Mickey is in Killoe he said. Mickey went on to say that his sister Theresa bought it and turned it into a bar before selling back to him twenty years later, he had worked in the Tara Mines previously. the man the myth the legend Micky Begley also starred in a Killoe County championship winning side back in 1959/60. Begley’s Bar Killoe is now ran by Mickey’s daughter Niamh Begley Lee, carrying on the great welcoming tradition of great pints and atmosphere.

A Nice Gent Jeff

On my usual cycle about town, seen Jeff Shannon who was enjoying one of the nice days we had last week, was in jovial form and did not mind my asking for a photograph. He knew my late grandfather same name as myself, Jeff also liked to go to the Dog track, my late grandfather loved the track, had his own dogs, and worked there part time to check dogs in, as everybody knows the track is closed and will never be what it was again, but Jeff remembers the days when it was very busy and good times. Jeff was born in County Cork reared Carlow and sixty years in County Longford working most of that with McLoughlin as a wood machinist, stair cases window frames. Met his lovely wife Mary while he was in County Carlow and her good self from Kilkenny.

Time to………..Say Goodbye

If you are Longford Town based and shopped at Lidl you would have came across store manager Sandra Vaitkeviciene, the lady that always had a great smile and always helpful. Sandra is moving on to pastures new to Mullingar as a store manager at Lidl. As we go about our daily lives, we should always be thankful to those that help us even if we do not know it, Sandra was a stalwart at Lidl Longford the 900th Lidl store in Ireland. Sandra was nine years in Lidl Longford and will be sadly missed by all staff, last Sunday the 29th August 2021 was the last day for Sandra, where she was thanked by fellow staff and general public who were sad to see Sandra’s journey come to an end in Longford.
